Original Post: You have now learned about the history of resource exploitation in the Southern Ocean, current management of Antarctic marine living resources, and the ecology of Antarctic krill. Although CCAMLR takes a precautionary, ecosystem approach to managing krill fisheries, there are still many risks and unknowns (e.g., climate change, impacts to marine predators, declines in krill stocks). In addition, there is disagreement among environmental groups as to whether Antarctic krill fisheries
should be labeled “sustainable.” Based on what you’ve learned, provide a summary of recommendations you would make to CCAMLR for the management of Antarctic krill fisheries. Try not to reiterate the same points as other classmates, and explain whether or not you believe there can be sustainable harvest of krill fisheries in the Antarctic.
