Mutual fund tracking assignment Each student will be given 2 mutual funds, 1 from the stock mutual fund list and 1 from the bond mutual fund list. Invest $10,000 in each fund. Use a table format (example provided on Pilot) to record the initial number of shares purchased and closing price of each investment as of the close of the stock market on Friday of each week beginning with Friday, September 4 until the Friday, November 6, 2015 (10 weeks). You can access this information at the library using The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Investor’s Business Daily or other research material in the finance laboratory, Rike 294, and through different on-line services. You may find the MSN Money or Yahoo Finance sites particularly helpful. • Complete an Investment Data and Analysis Sheet (sample provided) for each of your mutual funds. The information can be found on Morningstar data sheet provide in class or at www.library.morningstar.com which is accessible from any computer in Rike Hall. In addition to the fund information, do the following: 1. Calculate the “low/high” ratio for each investment during the time you were investing (low/high ratio = divide the lowest observed price of each investment on any Friday close by the highest observed for the same investment). Show your work and explain what the ratio tells you about the fund. 2. Based on the above ratios, what conclusions would you make about each investment and their suitability for either short-term, intermediate term or long-term goals? Explain your rationale. 3. Calculate the total return, and annualized total return (annualized holding period yield) for each investment. Show your work. 4. Explain how in the future, when making your own investment decisions, you will decide on what investments to use for which term goal. 5. Write a short essay, typically 3-4 pages analyzing the risk and return characteristics of ONE of you funds according to the outline provided in Pilot.

Disproportionate Burden Paper Paper details: The “Healthy Communities” movement values environmental health as one of the necessities for overall well-being. Despite many of the environmentally responsible policies attributed to the Environmental Justice Movement, many communities of color still experience a disproportionate burden of ill health from environmental or occupational hazards. Many U.S. neighborhoods and communities have become the dumping grounds for all kinds of environmental toxins and hazards. Furthermore, select groups of workers, such as migrant farm workers, are at increased risk of illness due to occupational exposures. You will conduct a literature review and identify a community of color or low-income community that is disproportionately exposed to an environmental or occupational hazard. Based on a literature review, you will write a paper that includes overview of the community, health conditions and statistics, influencing environmental and social factors, and recommendations for addressing the environmental health inequities of the community at risk. The class will be meeting librarian Adriana Poo at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library to review how to access journal articles using the SJSU library catalogue, as well as to review citation requirements, which is expected to be used in all papers requiring outside sources. Please review the HS172 Environmental Health LibGuide ahead of time. Students should submit a tentative research paper topic to the instructor to ensure topic is relevant and enough data will be available to complete assignment. Length is 7 to 8 pages, not counting reference pages.

Telephone Numbers B Letters or Numbers Lab #1 Telephone Numbers B Letters or Numbers Introduction Although telephones use both numbers and letters on the dialler, we use telephone numbers and not telephone letters. The chapter on memory in your text discusses how meaningful material is more easily remembered than meaningless material. Be sure to read and incorporate some of the information in Chapter 8 into your introduction. Hypotheses 1. The telephone sequences composed only of letters should be the easiest to recall. 2. The all numerical list should be the hardest to recall. Subjects: Apparatus: Method Ask 10 people, older than 10, to participate. Three lists of 10 sets. Prepare three pages each containing one list of items to be remembered. You will also need several pages for recording the answers and a pencil. Procedure: Work with your subjects one at a time. Give them List A to study for 30 seconds. Remove the list and allow 30 seconds to write down as many of the seven item sequences as they can remember, in any order. Repeat with List B, followed by List C. ? Results Prepare a table indicating the scores for each subject on the three lists, and calculate the mean (average) scores. The entire seven items must be correct to earn a point. Scores can range from 0 to 10 for each subject for each list. Discussion Did your results support the two hypotheses? Why not? Why were the all-letter sequences easiest to recall? If you were consulting to a new telephone company, what would you recommend and why? What are possible effects of 10-digit calling? Here you should discuss memory and meaningfulness. You might also provide suggestions for a new experiment based on this one or discuss applications of this problem in real life, for example, passwords for computers, bank accounts, etc. This is also where you can include any background reading you have done.
