Assessment 2 Description
CASE STUDY
Sarah is a 39 years old career consultant with a successful business. In the last two months she has experienced mood changes accompanied by a change in the overall level of activity.
She feels that she lacks energy and recently lost her interest in everyday activities. Sarah experiences difficulties in getting to work on time, as she often wakes up three hours earlier than normally and cannot get back to sleep. She has always been interested in keeping fit and healthy, and attended gym regularly three times a week.
However, in the last months Sarah has lost any desire in continuing with this activity, she often says that she doesn’t have the energy to exercise. She has lost 5 kilograms last month due to hear lack of appetite.
What bothers Sarah the most is her inability to perform well at work. Recently she has started skipping work altogether, and when she does go to work, she delegates most of her tasks to others because she does not feel confident enough to speak to clients
Heading 1: Introduction
Within this section, you are required to discuss the aim of the case study report.
Firstly, provide some referenced background information.
Secondly, discuss the aims of the case study report.
Worked Example.
A mental disorder, also called a mental illness or psychiatric disorder, is a behavioral or mental pattern that causes significant distress or impairment of personal functioning (Ramasamy, 2019). Such features may be persistent, relapsing and remitting, or occur as a single episode (Ramasamy, 2019).
This paper is a case study report and has four specific aims. Reference will be made to a case study when discussing the four aims. Firstly, identification as per the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) and a brief description of the mental disorder presented within the case study will be discussed. The possible causation of the disorder will then be explored. Thirdly, there will be discussions around available treatment modalities for the mental disorder. Fourthly, the mental disorder will be discussed from a historical and global perspective.
Heading 2: Identification / description of the mental disorder(s)
Within this section, you are required to discuss the identification / description of the mental health disorder.
Things to consider
Component 1 (Identification)
Ascertain what the possible mental health disorder(s) Sarah could have by referring to the ICD‐10 classification - https://icd.who.int/browse10/2016/en
Whilst you are not a qualified professional to diagnose patients, for the purpose of this assessment, you are allowed to infer what the mental health disorder is based on the case study and the ICD-10.
Once you have established what the mental health disorder(s) might be or is, you may also want to refer to the DSM-5 manual to validate / corroborate your gathered information / evidence.
Component 2 (Description)
Based on the information gathered from component 1, you will need to provide a brief description of the possible mental health disorder(s) Sarah has.
You will talk about the symptoms manifestations of the mental health disorder(s)
You may want to talk about the co-morbid symptoms that exist within the mental health disorder. We spoke about this in class with great depth.
Note: You will need to refer to the wider literature to substantiate your claims and assertions for Components 1 and 2.
Heading 3: Explanation of the possible causes
Within this section, you are required to discuss the explanation of the possible causes of the mental health disorder.
Things to consider
What are the possible causes of the mental disorder(s)?
You may want to discuss some of the following factors: biological, environmental, cultural.
Note: You will need to refer to the wider literature to substantiate your claims and assertions.
Heading 4: Identification of the available treatments
Within this section, you are required to discuss the available treatments for the mental health disorder.
Things to consider
What treatment options are available for the mental health disorder(s)?
For example, some therapies to support depression include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), behaviour therapy and psychotherapy. Medications might also be needed depending on the symptom severity.
You only need to discuss a few “available treatments”. Do not get overwhelmed in thinking you need to discuss all treatments. What you choose to discuss is entirely up to you.
For example you may want to focus on dance therapy to combat anxiety and CBT for cognitive dissonance issues.
Note: You will need to refer to the wider literature to substantiate your claims and assertions
Heading 5: Discussion of the historical and global perspectives
Within this section, you are required to discuss the historical and global perspectives of the mental health disorder.
Things to consider
It would be useful for you to revisit your weekly lecture slides as we would have covered a lot of information on historical and global perspectives.
You will need to talk about how mental illness was viewed in the past and how it is viewed currently. You are required to provide a broad overarching view.
This is where you can refer to some of the models / frameworks such as the “medical model of disability” which viewed individuals with mental illness as being broken and diseased. You can also discuss the stigma that is associated with mental illness.
You may want to discuss about the language choice. We spoke about person first language (people with mental illness) versus identity first language (mentally retarded people)
You are then required to discuss how your chosen mental health disorder viewed in society today within Australia and globally?
Note: You will need to refer to the wider literature to substantiate your claims and assertions.
Heading 6: Conclusion
Within this section, you are required to summarize the findings of the case study report.
Things to consider
Do not include new information or references.
Summarize the body of the case study report succinctly.
The conclusion must tell the reader if the aims of the case study report has been satisfactorily met.
Leave the reader with something to think about
Heading 6: References
Within this section, you are required to reference correctly.
Things to consider
Use APA 6th edition manual (Refer to the MANUAL)
You're in-text references must be congruent (match up) with your reference list
Reference accurately as per the manual
Omit using too many direct quotes in verbatim format
Paraphrase and reference your work
