Plot:

When Britain declares war on Germany in 1939, Alan Turing travels to Bletchley Park. Under the direction of Commander Alastair DennistonLinks to an external site., he joins the cryptography team of Hugh AlexanderLinks to an external site., John CairncrossLinks to an external site., Peter HiltonLinks to an external site., Keith Furman and Charles Richards. The team are trying to analyzeLinks to an external site. the Enigma machineLinks to an external site., which the Nazis use to send coded messages.

Turing is difficult to work with, and considers his colleagues inferior; he works alone to design a machineLinks to an external site. to decipher Enigma messages. After Denniston refuses to fund construction of the machine, Turing writes to Prime Minister Winston ChurchillLinks to an external site., who puts Turing in charge of the team and funds the machine.

Turing's machine, which he names Christopher, is constructed, but cannot determine the Enigma encryption settings quickly enough; the Germans reset them each day. Denniston orders it to be destroyed and Turing fired, but the other cryptographers threaten to leave if Turing goes.

After overhearing a conversation with a female clerk about messages she receives, Turing has an epiphanyLinks to an external site., realizing he can program the machine to decode words he already knows exist in certain messages. After he recalibrates the machine, it quickly decodes a message and the cryptographers celebrate. Turing realizes they cannot act on every decoded message or the Germans will realize Enigma has been broken.

Answers to these questions as a file (DOC) attachment below:

1-) Does the Cryptography Team behave as a Mechanistic or Organic Organization? Give specific examples.

2-) What type of organization does Commander Dennisen believe he has created, Mechanistic or Organic? Is he correct? Why or why not?

Full Answer Section

  • Division of Labor: Team members have specialized roles, such as Hugh Alexander focusing on crib-based decryption.
  • Standardized Procedures: Established methods for analyzing Enigma messages might exist (though the movie emphasizes Turing's innovation).
  • Emphasis on Efficiency: The team's primary goal is to crack the Enigma code quickly, suggesting a focus on efficiency.

Evidence of an Organic Structure:

  • Problem-Solving Collaboration: Despite initial friction, Turing eventually collaborates with Joan Clarke and other team members to refine his machine and decryption approach.
  • Adaptation: Turing's "epiphany" moment demonstrates the team's ability to adapt their strategy based on new insights.
  • Innovation: Turing's creation of the code-breaking machine (Christopher) exemplifies innovation beyond established procedures.

Overall:

The Cryptography Team exhibits characteristics of both mechanistic and organic structures. While a hierarchy and some specialization exist, there's also room for innovation and collaboration, particularly after Turing joins the team.

2. Commander Denniston's Perception

Denniston Likely Believes He Created a Mechanistic Organization:

  • Hierarchical Leadership: He issues orders and expects compliance.
  • Focus on Efficiency: He prioritizes cracking the code quickly, a hallmark of mechanistic structures.
  • Limited Innovation Tolerance: He initially resists funding Turing's unconventional machine.

Denniston is Partially Correct:

The team does have elements of a mechanistic structure. However, he underestimates the potential for innovation and collaboration within the team. Turing's success and the team's ultimate reliance on his unorthodox approach demonstrate the limitations of a purely mechanistic approach in this complex situation.

Conclusion:

"The Imitation Game" portrays a team that operates within a somewhat rigid structure but also demonstrates flexibility and adaptation. This highlights the potential benefits of a hybrid approach that leverages aspects of both mechanistic and organic structures to achieve success in complex situations.

The Imitation Game: Mechanistic vs. Organic Organizations

Based on the information you provided about the movie "The Imitation Game," here's an analysis of the Cryptography Team's structure and Commander Denniston's perception:

1. Cryptography Team: Mechanistic vs. Organic

Evidence of a Mechanistic Structure:

  • Formal Hierarchy: Commander Denniston leads the team, issuing orders and expecting them to be followed. Turing initially works independently, but ultimately reports to Denniston.
