Canadian Political Ideas
Document Analysis
This short essay assignment is to be based on ONE of the primary sources that are used in this course. They include selections from Fierlbeck’s The Development of Political Thought in Canada: An Anthology and the other documents made available. Other sources can be suggested.
The aim of the assignment is to read a key document on a topic (e.g. on the Tory vision of the 19th c. or on Liberal constitutionalism, or on versions of democratization, feminism, nationalism, multiculturalism, etc.) by a truly insightful author – exemplars of which are to be found most readily in the Fierlbeck Anthology.
The short essay should really be YOUR treatment of what the author says. You should not go to secondary sources (including Fierlbeck or any other) but concentrate on the text itself and what it means to you. While you would concentrate on a clear description of the document (what the author means to say), you certainly will want to assess how persuasive and/or even how valid you think the author’s account is in your view. This is a short essay, focussed on the document and your reading of it.
You should clear your choice with me BEFORE you start writing. You may want to talk about your choices even before you decide on a topic and author. Just make an appointment.
The essay should be about 5-6 pages (for undergrads) or 6-7 pages (for graduates), which means about 1,500/1800 words.
The assignment should be submitted – electronically – by Friday February 17th!
It is worth 10% of the course grade. You may rewrite within 1 week of return of the paper.
Late papers will be frowned upon.
