Business Job Interview Report
Students can gain a large amount of information by going into the business world and interviewing business management employees. You are going to interview someone in
a management area of a Company that you might be interested in working. Companies should fit into one of the following categories: retail, wholesale, industrial, or
service. The company must have at least 10 employees. The company must be approved by the Instructor prior to the interview. You will need to find out the following
information regarding the company. You will write a report based on these findings.

Answer the following questions based on your interview:
1. How did you become interested in (field of interest)?
2. What industry is it included?
3. What are the companies’ main products or services? Where does manufacturing occur? Are there multiple plants or service locations? (chapter 8)
4. What are the channels (s) of distribution for the company’s products? Where are the company’s products sold? (chapter 13)
5. How is the company organized? Is it organized by function, product, location, customer, or some combination of bases? (chapter 7)
6. How does the company use technology to gather and use information? How is the information managed? Is a computer system used? How well is the information system
integrated with other aspects of the organizational control? (chapter 14)
7. Who are its major competitors?
8. Where are the company’s headquarters?
9. Did you have formal training for the job that you perform? What school did you attend? What type of classes did you take? Did you receive a degree or certificate
and if so, what?
10. What is the best educational preparation for this field?
11. What kind of growth patterns are you seeing in (field of interest( that I should consider in my decisions?
12. From your experience with individuals in (field of interest), what personal attributes do you think are essential for success?
13. Which professional journals and organizations should I know in this field?
14. What skills are needed (field of interest) and which ones should I be concentrating on at this point in my education?
15. How do you performs each of the functions of management (see chapter 6)?
16. What experiences have you had that have been invaluable to you in learning your job?
17. What is a typical workday like? Would it be possible for me to observe one sometime?
18. Are you seeing changes in (field of interest? If so, what are they and how do you deal with the changes?
19. What are some of the difficulties of (field of interest) and what motivates you to stay in spite of them?
20. What differences do you perceive between what you do and what the equivalent employee in a larger organization would do?
21. Is the company currently hiring? What kinds of jobs are available?
22. What kinds of compensation and benefits are used to attract job applicants?
23. Does the company use motivation techniques such as flextime, part-time work, job sharing or telecommuting? (chapter 10)
24. Does the company offer an ESOP? (chapter 10)
25. Does the company make a statement about the importance of cultural diversity in the workplace? (chapter 9)
26. What types of advancement opportunities are available in (field of interest)?
27. What else should I know in order to make an informed decision about going in this field?
28. Can you recommend someone else for me to talk to in this field and why? When I call him/her, may I use your name?
29 Do you know of comparable job titles I should be exploring in (field of interest)?

Criteria for Grading
1. How accurately are the instructions followed? All points listed above must be
covered on your written report.
2. This report must be written in essay form.
3. Is the paper well organized and coherent?
4. Spelling, neatness, and grammar will be examined.
5. The written report must be typed, double-spaced, on 8 ½ x 11” paper.
