For each video, explain how each mode of each PSA functions on its own. Write a few sentences on each video, addressing the following:
• What written words appear in the PSA? What are the words doing, showing, or telling?
• What sound is included in the PSA? Does the sound change at all during the PSA? What is the sound doing or enhancing?
• What static images appear in the PSA? What are the images doing or showing?
• What moving images appear in the PSA? What is their role in the PSA?
Part Two: Analyze the PSAs
For each video, how do the modes work together in the PSAs to convey meaning? Write a few sentences on each video, addressing the following:
• What is the target audience of the PSA (young or old, rural or urban, working class or wealthy, for example)? How can you tell? How do the modes seem designed to reach the intended audience? Are they effective for reaching that audience?
• What do you think is the purpose of the PSA? Who made the PSA and why? What effect do you think the PSA is meant to have (increase awareness, change behavior, solicit donations, and so on)? How do the modes encourage that response?
Part Three: Written Response:
Your Task: Based on your evaluation of all three PSAs, which one was most effective, and why? What specific elements of these PSAs do you see yourself incorporating into your own multimodal project? Did they give you any new ideas?
