Respond to the following scenario and questions:
Betsy, a 4-year old child, is having difficulty with aggression, attention, and sleep. These changes are recent and drastically different then her usual behavioral patterns. Betsy is now screaming and throwing food at lunch time and refusing to lay down and nap. Just as fever is an indication the body is dealing with an infection, when these behaviors are present, they can indicate the brain and body are responding to a stress or threat.
- How likely is it that something bad, sad, or scary has happened to Betsy recently?
- What specific concerns might you have about Betsy being exposed to stress or something that would be scary to her?
- Speculate how Betsy’s home life might have significantly changed recently.
- Speculate how your responses to 1-3 might now change if Betsy were a child of color.
- How likely is Betsy to have experiences at least one (1) Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE)?
- If Betsy’s ACE(s) are not addressed, what are some of the potential long-term outcomes Betsy might likely experience later in her life physically, emotionally/socially, and cognitively?
