Think about the theme of boundaries in Mesopotamian mythology and the first 11 chapters of the first book of the Hebrew Bible. In Tablet I of Gilgamesh, the gods seem to acknowledge that the king has gone too far and is threatening to cross a boundary of some kind. This is what sets the story in motion. What are the important boundaries in this poem? How and why are these boundaries preserved? What happens when these boundaries are crossed? How does this compare to the boundaries that God seems intent on preserving in Genesis? What is the role of curses in these texts? Who gets cursed and why? What is the relationship between curses and boundaries? What does this tell us about ancient Mesopotamian (or ancient Hebrew) culture and values?
