We will be reading two book-length qualitative studies that are related to course topics.
We will divide into two groups; each group will take responsibility for doing a deep read of one
of the books.
Discussion leaders: The first hour of class will be spent "teaching the book" to the
rest of the class. Some things you should cover:
• Who is the author? How does this book fit into their larger research trajectory?
• Describe the main argument(s) of the book
• What is the author's source of data? How do they use this to build their argument?
• What does this book teach us about technology and its social implications?
• Which technology and society perspective (tech determinism, SCOT, social informatics,
community informatics, socio-technical systems) do you see the author adopting for her
analysis? Why do you see it this way?
• What (in your opinion) does this book add to the larger field of Communication?
Then, prepare a series of questions, discussion prompts, and/ or activities that will help facilitate
a larger class discussion about the major themes of the book. This discussion will take place
over the remainder of the class.
Grading: The week after your group's discussion takes place, each group member is responsible
for uploading an individual reflection that outlines your contributions to the group leading up to
the presentation. Also include a brief reflection about what (if anything) you would change were
you to be a group discussion leader again in the future. Word length is variable, use as many or
as few words as you need to complete your reflection.
