BioLaurus – Healthcare Technology
Team 2 has selected BioLaurus as a case study for its project. BioLaurus is a specialty preclinical contract consulting and research services company. It provides dynamic molecular imaging solutions to partners in global pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and academia to provide capabilities to support organizations involved in research and healthcare. One of the technological services that it delivers is medical 3D printing, used to produce implantation devices, instrumentation devices, and prosthesis devices. It has assessed industry trends in international markets and is monitoring market conditions for 3D printing in countries including Australia, China, South Korea, UK, Haiti, and Canada. BioLaurus notes that both the technology and the markets are maturing but seems to be prepared to identify opportunities for strategic changes as trends are identified and assessments change (BioLaurus, 2017). Team 2 is eager to provide analysis for BioLaurus’ strategic decision-making which will affect both the company, its partners, and the international market segment; beneficiaries will also include the large number of patients in developing countries that will benefit from delivery of new medical capabilities (BioLaurus, 2018).
Team 2 initially narrowed its industry selections to three: financial services, healthcare, and technology. After further deliberation and focused discussions on why it selected those 3 industries, it became apparent that the team was very interested in something with a technology focus, but within the healthcare industry. The team was attracted to healthcare based on its long-term growth potential. It also became evident that most of the technology reasons provided were not linked to IT companies, but on the idea of technology as a cross-industry enabler. Since the healthcare industry is very fragmented, the team also needed to determine a market segment. As the team continued to discuss candidate companies, the idea of a healthcare company with a technology focus continued to generate the most interest. Two companies were identified that fit that criteria: BioLaurus and Dynasplint Systems, which also does 3D printing but is more focused on providing tensioning devices that increase range of motion. Team members provided their top 3 selections in prioritized order, from which BioLaurus was identified as the team nomination. This also resulted in the selection of the healthcare industry market segment that globalEDGE characterizes as “Surgical Appliances and Instruments” (GlobalEDGE, 2018). According to globalEDGE, the primary demand drivers for this segment are demographics and advances in medical care and technology. GlobalEDGE also identifies profitability drivers as the ability to obtain grants and federal funds, and efficient operations. BioLaurus is well-postured to address the demand drivers by delivering advanced products and services to large underserved populations in developing countries. The efficiencies that can be delivered through its used of advanced imaging systems and 3D printing will also speak to the profitability drivers. Its experience in preclinical contract consulting and research services also provides experience in dealing with governmental requirements, including skillsets needed for requesting and qualifying for grants.
BioLaurus Inc is a small privately held biotechnology company based in San Diego with 11-50 employees (BioLaurus, 2018). It was founded in 2008 as a next-generation Contract Research Organization (CRO) (BioLaurus, 2010). Experian rates its credit rating as “low risk” (Experian Information Solutions, Inc, 2017).
