Astronomy Sense of Importance
In Astronomy 101 this semester, one of my hopes is that you have gained a better understanding of what science has to offer in response to the age-old question: What is humanity’s place in the Universe? This question can be approached in many ways; certainly, this class has tried to paint a picture for you of the physical location of our home — the Earth, the Solar System, the Milky Way — in the Universe. But there’s another — more philosophical — question buried in here that interests me now, and is the particular one to which I would like you to respond. I warn you ahead of time that I have purposefully left it quite open-ended, even a bit vague in nature. Has your sense of your importance changed as a result of this class?
