n the early modernist period around 1900, many artists, art critics and art historians who supported them,
began to write about new art ideas, methods and techniques that were explored in conveying them visually in
artwork. These writing often became “Manifestoes,” or “theories,” that were written for journals and other
publications, sometimes even letters. Reading the words of these artists and other writers help us to more fully
understand and appreciate 20th century modernist art.
PURPOSE: The objective of this assignment is to select and ponder one of these art theories. By reading and
writing about it, you’ll seek to achieve a greater understanding of the underlying aesthetic principles the artist
was striving to express in their work. You will further apply your understanding to one work by the artist, and
share this understanding by way of an in-class presentation
