Art Paper
PAPER GUIDELINES
Step One: Visit one of the many local museums ?OR- virtually visit a museum (see approved list below)
Step Two: CHOOSE one piece of artwork from that museum that you will focus on. You MUST include all of the relevant information and a photo of it on the cover sheet of your final paper in correct MLA format. For example: Goya, Francisco. The Family of Charles IV. 1800. Oil on canvas. Museo del Prado, Madrid.
Choosing Art: Think about Monuments Men and the men and women who risked their lives to save art at the end of World War Two. Consider the museum you are visiting and, decide which one piece you would save if the building were on fire or about to be destroyed for any reason. Why would you choose the work that you did? Is it because of the story the work tells? Its importance to the history of art? Its innovative composition? Its intense personal expression? Its rarity? The high skill level of its creator? Some other reason? Consider these ideas carefully and make sure to include some of these thoughts in your final paper.
Step Three: Write the paper using the questions provided. Be very specific and descriptive. You may write in the first person.
1. INTRODUCTION: Begin with a section that offers a brief, factual overview: What museum did you choose? Was it in person or online? Why that museum? Then talk about your overall museum experience ? did you enjoy it? Had you been to that museum before (either in person or virtually)? When? If you actually go to a museum talk about how being in a museum is different from just looking at pictures of art in a book (be specific). If you go to an online museum, talk about how the experience might have been different if you actually went there in person.
2. PURPOSE: What is the name of the artwork you are analyzing and who is the creator? Why would you choose the work that you did? Is it because of the story the work tells? Its importance to the history of art? Its innovative composition? Its intense personal expression? Its rarity? The high skill level of its creator? Some other reason?
3. QUESTION AT ISSUE: Why museums? Why are museums relevant places to study humanities? Why are museums important to our understanding of a culture?
4. ASSUMPTIONS: Artists create art with purpose. What do you think this artist?s purpose is in creating this work? Why do you think this? What clues can be found in the artwork and the title that lead you to this conclusion? Are there other themes that are addressed within the art? What are they? How do you know? (Note: ?to make money? is certainly one reason why art is created, but you must be able to support this with facts. Think about what we talked about regarding Van Gogh. Try thinking outside the box on this question.)
5. IMPLICATIONS AND CONSEQUENCES: Comment on your emotional response, aesthetic reaction, why you liked the piece, and why you think it?s important. Did it make you think or see things differently? Does it have a strong message?
6. AUTHENTICITY: What is the difference between something that is ?real? or authentic, and something that is a copy? Would you rather see an original or a copy? Why? Is it more ?powerful? to see an original? Why or why not?
7. POINTS OF VIEW: What personal meaning do you find in the work you have chosen? What do you feel are its universal messages?
8. CORE VALUES: Which of the Saint Leo core values are reflected in the piece? Do you agree with what this artist is trying to communicate to his/her audience? Did this artwork make you think differently?
9. CONCEPTS: Using terms from class, discuss the media (material the art is made from), i.e. oil paint on canvas, carved stone, etc. Then discuss the technique (the way the material is constructed, applied etc.) How does the media and/or technique influence and/or enhance the meaning? If it not a traditional media or process, do you think the new technology or material is superior to traditional media? Why? Use any vocabulary from the class to discuss your art in detail. You MUST cite this in the paper (page numbers from the textbook required). You must choose a minimum of THREE elements/principles of art and discuss how the artist utilizes them in this image.
10. CONCLUSIONS AND INTERPRETATIONS: Is this an artwork of value (not necessarily monetary value, but cultural value)? What is the value of this art in today?s society? Do you feel the message the artwork conveys will be relevant in the future (or not, if you feel it will not)?
Something to consider before printing and submitting your paper = Are your points explained and supported in a complete and coherent manner? Are you using correct grammar, syntax, and punctuation?
Additional instructions to follow before turning in your Paper:
1. Staple all pages together at top left corner (If relevant, the proof of attendance should be attached behind the paper). -3 points for papers submitted without staples
2. Cover sheet: Include your name, HUM 110CL-CA-OX and total word count (0X refers to YOUR section number for the class so replace the X with the number), Name of museum you visited AND the name of the art you are focusing on (in correct MLA style ? see above). -3 points for papers submitted without a cover sheet and/or without all of the required information.
3. Papers must be typed, double spaced, in Times New Roman 12pt. font. -3 points for papers that do not meet this requirement.
4. Because there is no research required and you are providing relevant information on the cover page, a works cited page is not required. For at least one question, you will need to cite the textbook ? do this IN THE PAPER in this format: ?XXXXX? (Janaro and Altshuler 156). This is correct MLA style in that it gives the authors? last names and the page number and nothing else. -3 points for each incorrect parenthetical citation because the correct format is right here.
5. Papers must be submitted in HARD COPY format in class ?and- to the dropbox LearningStudio.
Late policy: Papers will be accepted late with a 10 point penalty PER DAY late. After one week has passed, no late papers will be accepted at all.
I must have both the online submission and the hard copy or I will not grade your paper until I have both. It will be considered late (and treated accordingly).
You have until 11:59pm on the day it is due to submit the paper to Turnitin, but the easiest thing to do is submit it and print it at the same time so you do not forget
After 11:59pm on the due date, if the paper has not been submitted to Turnitin, it is LATE even if you gave me a hard copy in class that day
NO PAPERS will be accepted as an emailed attachment for any reason
You may choose to turn the paper in early
ART MUSEUMS
Art museums can be mind-expanding or sleep-inducing, depending on how you approach them. It is a mistake to enter a museum with the belief that you should like everything you see?or even that you should see everything that is there. Without selective viewing, the visitor to a large museum is likely to come down with a severe case of museum exhaustion.
There is a way to enjoy an art museum without experiencing overload. If you were to go to a new restaurant and try to sample everything on the menu, you would probably get sick. In both restaurants and museums, selection is the key to a positive experience.
It makes sense to approach an art museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches a city for a first visit: Find out what there is to see. In the museum, find out about the schedule of special shows, then see those exhibitions and outstanding works that interest you.
Don't stay too long in a museum. Take breaks. Perhaps there is a garden or cafe in which you can pause for a rest. The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or how many works you see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding something that "speaks" to you, then enjoying it in leisurely contemplation. (Quoted from Pamela DeCius ? handout)
