Write an essay that uses a clearly defined thesis statement to make an argument that marshals ONLY material
from the assigned readings as evidence.
Topic:
"As societies developed from primitive, nomadic tribes to more complex agrarian cultures that developed
permanent towns/cities, their ability to build larger and more sophisticated structures evolved as well. From
using caves carved out of nature to creating massive stone structures dedicated to their deities and rulers,
architectural development is intrinsically linked to cultural development. Architecture possesses the ability to
convey a society’s most important messages and beliefs to a wide audience. This can be accomplished in
several ways, and different cultures highlighted and capitalized on the ability architecture possesses as a
means of communication. Discuss 2-3 different cultures/periods and analyze the ways in which they utilized
architecture for cultural expression and development. Be sure to consider dedication of resources, common
typologies, function, materiality, etc. when supporting your argument".
