Skills :Describe any skills you possess that demonstrate the following core competencies required to successfully complete the Applied Museum Studies program.
• Manual Dexterity: to have skilful performance or ability to accomplish dexterous tasks without difficulty with the hands.
• Visual Acuity: the ability for one to see clearly and render colours effectively.
• Attention to Detail: is thorough in accomplishing a task with concern for all the areas involved, no matter how small.
• Patience: is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation without acting on annoyance/anger
in a negative way
• Ability to work within a Team: demonstrate the attitudes and abilities necessary to work effectively in a group setting, such as active listening, effective resource
utilization, establishing and measuring goals, etc.
Manual Dexterity: As a child, I have always loved drawing and painting, and was able to hone these abilities by practicing them during my leisure time. As I grew up,
I got exposed to many mediums in which I can express my artistic ideas. These hobbies helped me sharpen my manual dexterity. Also, during my teenage period, I always
loved to play bass guitar, and I was able to develop my hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity that will be required in the Applied Museum Studies program. Manual
dexterity might come naturally for some people like Mozart or Michelangelo but I believe that manual dexterity do not develop overnight. Therefore, I practiced and
polished my manual dexterity over long time so that I can perform in the professional level in museum.
Visual Acuity: I have worn my glasses since I was a child. Life with glasses can be sometimes uncomfortable and frustrating. Whenever I play soccer, I had to wore
goggles to prevent my glasses from shattering and to support my eyesight. Without glasses, my eyesight may not be as good but with glasses on I have 20/ 13 or 1.53
(decimal units) which is higher than average eyesight which is 1 (decimal unit) or 20/20. My glasses help me provide good eyesight to render colours effectively and
see things clearly. I am naturally good at extinguishing different shapes and characteristics of the object and grasp people’s personality and characteristics very
well. This talent may have come from my detail oriented nature, but without my good visual acuity I will not be able to pay attention to detail.
Attention to Detail: This will be probably one of the most important skills that can be regularly exercised in the Applied Museum Studies program. A detail oriented
person is someone who pays attention to the details and can make a conscious effort to understand causes instead of just the effects, and that does this in a second
nature type of way. It should not be something that the person has to work at. Throughout the life in university I realized that I have an eye for details and keenness
to exploring topic or issue at hand, as well as reasons behind it and issues surrounding it. Furthermore, patience and determination to explore the problem is also a
part of the characteristics of me. I have proactive attitude that focuses on creating ideas and plans for correcting issues or handling daily tasks. In addition to the
conceptual detail, my eyes are for the details of the physical objects. For example, I notice the change of my friend’s hair at first glance, or I notice the different
driving and handling feeling of the different cars easily and can describe the feeling creatively. All these aspects that I possess can potentially be used in the
Applied Museum Studies Program.
Patience: There are many people emphasizing the power of the Three Ps which are Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance. I agree that the Three Ps allow people to
excel in life and make their wildest dreams come true. At young age, my dream was to become an expert historian so my first goal was to go to the university. However,
English as a second language, studying social studies, history, writing and reading books in English was a challenge. However, with patience and over time I started to
be better at reading and writing in English. I believe patience is absolutely necessary if one wants to achieve anything. Almost nothing in life is instant. Great
achievements often take years to attain. My journey of learning a new language and studying in Canadian university was only possible because I value the Three Ps:
Patience, Persistence, and Perseverance.
Ability to work within a Team: In many areas or part of this society are keen to recruit people who are able to cooperate, solve problems and work in teams. As less
hierarchical organizations have emerged with project teams, self-managed work teams and management teams, so the requirements to getting along with the people and the
team becomes increasingly important. I first experienced team spirit and team work when I joined a soccer club when I was at UBC. I played soccer as a teenager but,
back then I did not realize the importance of teamwork at the younger age. However, as I grow up and play for the team I realized that teammates are for one another
covering each other, and stand by the side. From then on, I learned that teamwork involves working confidently within groups of people not being arrogant but with
dignity, contributing my own effort and ideas effectively, taking a share of the responsibility, being assertive rather than passive or aggressive, accepting and
learning from constructive criticism and most importantly, giving positive, constructive feedback and encouragement to others.
