Your annotated poem will be submitted in PDF format. You may do your actual annotations in a word
processing program (like Microsoft Word) first, or you may print out a copy of your chosen poem and do your
annotations by hand before scanning them into PDF format.
Sample annotations are available in the poetry module in GeorgiaView, but you may use your creativity with
the assignment. Whatever format you choose however, the annotations should be visually attractive and
legible.
Other Directions for this assignment:
- Choose a set of song lyrics or a poem of approximately 10 – 25 lines in length.
- Identify examples of the following elements in your poem or song:
the major theme(s)
3-5 examples of figurative language: irony, metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, symbolism, contrast,
paradox, oxymoron, etc.
Rhyme scheme or free verse
Types of rhyme: end rhyme, internal rhyme, and slant rhyme
Sound devices: assonance, consonance, alliteration, repetition
Imagery: sight, sound, taste, touch, smell
Structure/Form: end stop vs. enjambment, punctuation patterns, layout of the poem or son on the page - When you post your annotated poem, include a brief explanation (in the text box) of why you chose this
particular poem or song to annotate. - Review and respond to at least two other classmates’ posted annotations.

P.S. Because this assignment will also help you brainstorm for Paragraph Assignment 2, be sure to keep the
following questions in mind as you complete your annotation:
What is the theme of the poem? What strategies does the poet use to convey the theme?
What is the overall tone of the poem? What strategies does the poet use to convey the tone?
How does the figurative language impact the poem as a whole?
How does the imagery impact the poem as a whole?
How do the aural elements (rhyme, sound devices, etc.) impact the poem as a whole?
