Code the artifact, “ fishing spear,” which involves applying the major tenets of the rhetorical theory being used. Use your theory paper to identify specific symbolic units in your artifact. Refer back to the Foss chapter for your method for support. I recommend following her instructions about taking strips of paper and cutting them up and organizing them spatially. It makes for a different way of visualizing and understand the frequency or intensity of some symbolic units.
After conducting the analysis explaining the results of your application of the method to the artifact. This paper should include:
- The key themes, ideas, and symbols uncovered in your coding process. Use specific pieces of evidence from the artifact to support each finding, rather than a general or holistic analysis of the artifact. Consider using headers to provide clear organization of key themes or ideas.
- Your working research question(s). After completing your initial analysis, you need to finalize an appropriate research question that your research has been attempting to explore. This will be dependent on the method you are using, and what your findings were in the analysis. It may be one from your initial topic proposal, or may be a new one that emerges in the context of your method.
