Create an original composition for a duo combination with a drone (three parts total) based on what you learned in your analysis.
Choose an expressive premise — you may find or write a poem to use as lyrics OR find or write a story to use as a ‘program’
Choose two instruments — one of the parts can be a vocal line and you may choose to set your poem as lyrics
Choose a key area
Choose a NEW mode — make sure the mood of the mode fits your expressive premise
If you would like, you may choose TWO modes to create a piece with contrasting sections (this is not mandatory)
When composing your piece, spend time improvising with the mode to find the “pure resonances” that we have been discussing. Hone in on the expressive truths hidden within these resonances and allow them to guide your compositional process.
The goal is not to COPY Parisa Sabet’s piece exactly, but to creatively “borrow”/“steal” and extrapolate some core concepts, ideas, and/or inspiration. It is important for you to put your own spin on your creation.
