After looking over the information and readings, discuss your thoughts on the importance of symbols within a country's identity. Court cases have been filed over things like burning flags and saying the pledge--what does that tell us about the value of these symbols? What restrictions, if any, should be in place regarding respect and/or protest in relation to symbols like the flag, pledge, seal, and anthem? If our symbols changed (looking at you, turkey), would they change the meaning behind the symbols? In essence, how powerful are these symbols and how powerful should they be?
