Project Descriptions.
This course has five graded writing assignments, plus a sixth optional extra-credit assignment. Students are also required to complete a Research Project Analytical
Framework, a non-graded writing assignment, in one of the weekly online conferences. Refer to the Course Schedule for assignment due dates. There is no Final Exam in
this course.
Writing Assignment 1: Action Request with Audience Profile
Assignment Details
Follow the directions in ?Your Task? for Case 7 (Message Strategies: Making Routine Requests) on p. 187 of Chapter 7. Your e-mail message, including the signature
block, should fit on one screen of text.
On a separate page, develop an audience profile describing a typical customer service representative at SongThrong.com, following the 6-step process bulleted on pp. 59
? 60 in Chapter 3 (use Figure 3.2 on page 59 as your model for formatting and content level of detail). Use your imagination and critical thinking skills to come up
with the details needed to complete the profile. Include the audience profile in the same Word file as the letter.
Figure 7.3 on page 171 is a model for the format, length and level of detail needed in a claim request.

Writing Assignment 2: Bad News Letter with Audience Profile
Assignment Details
Follow the directions in “Your Task” for Case 4 (Message Strategies: Making Negative Announcements) on page 216 in Chapter 8. Your letter should be no more than one
page in length.
On a separate page, develop an audience profile describing the owner of Midwest Sparkleen, again using the format/content model (page 59) and 6-item process checklist
(pp. 59 – 60) in Chapter 3. Include the audience profile in the same file as the letter.
Use sample business letter formats A.3 (p. 422) or A.4 (p. 423).
Grading Criteria
Your letter will be graded by these criteria:
Meets minimum criteria: deadline met; one page; single-spaced
Expresses gratitude for exemplary service during first four years of contract
Gives reasons for non-renewal in a way that elicits understanding
Decision is stated diplomatically
Organized in indirect order:
? opener provides buffer
? middle provides explanation
o cites examples in case study
? closes on a respectful note that maintains goodwill
Shows “you” attitude
Tone is courteous and professional
Sentences are concise and well-constructed
