Accents and Dialects Analysis (Middlesbrough accent reporter)
Part A
Analyse the accent of the BBC presenter Steph McGovern from the three video clips provided on moodle. For each of the following, explain what would be expected of a broad Middlesbrough accent and then analyse the data provided fully using IPA conventions and comment on what you find.
1. The STRUT vowel
2. The BATH vowel
3. The GOAT vowel
4. The FACE vowel
5. Word-final /ŋ/
6. /k/
7. Intervocalic /t/
Part B
Discuss the attitudes to regional accents shown in the reaction of viewers to her accent and in her choice to maintain her accent.
Further guidance
• Include a brief introduction and conclusion. Otherwise structure your answer as per the instructions.
• Try to identify and phonetically transcribe all the relevant words. You can do this in a table/list and then give a general description of what you find in an accompanying paragraph.
• Use appropriate linguistic terminology and conventions throughout.
• Use brackets correctly: / / for phonemes and [ ] for realization.
• You do not need to use diacritics, just represent the realizations using the closest IPA symbol.
• Use the line numbers in the transcripts to reference your examples from the data.
• Use italic or angle brackets for the written form of a word. For example, thank (l1) or <thank> (l1).
• You must refer to the essential reading for this assignment. You need to do this for two main reasons. Firstly you need to research the Middlesbrough accent. Secondly you need to refer to ideas on language attitudes in your discussion.
• You are encouraged to read beyond the required texts with reference to the resources list and to find your own relevant literature.
• In referring to the reading you may occasionally use quotation but you should mostly put the ideas into your own words. Always include a reference in the text and a bibliography that matches your references. (Don’t include items in the bibliography that you have not referred to in the text). Examples of correct citation:
o Quotation:
In northern accents, except for the midlands, “/a/ is not of the [æ] type but a fully open vowel somewhere between front and central” (Wells 1982 p.356).
o Own words:
In northern accents, except for the midlands, the phoneme /a/ is fully open [a] rather than [æ] (Wells 1982 p.356).
The data
Part A, 3 video clips are provided through moodle. Log in may be required. A rough transcript is provided below.
Data 1
Matthew thank you very much. And we will be talking to the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell later on in the programme just after eight.
Data 2
Uh it’s- What’s really interesting I think as well is how our expressions’ve changed when we’re having our photograph taken. So you know back in the day no one would smile in a photo would they. Then it kind of became (a smile). And now it’s pouting. I know we were taking the Mick there with Nick. But, Shayaz, people now, there’re so many pictures of pouting. We’re gonna look back at this era and think, why wasn’t anyone smiling?
Data 3
There’s also a lot more you can do with a photo isn’t there. So there’s a lot of photoshopping and things going on. And that actually- Shayaz, what are your thoughts on this, as a vlogger you know as a young woman who’s putting pictures out there. Often now I’ll meet people who look nothing like their pictures.
