We have just learned about the elements (line, shape, value, texture, color) and principles of design (unity/variety, focal point(s), eye movement, repetition/rhythm, balance (can be through symmetry or asymmetry). Now you get to practice making a composition and focus on these formal concepts (the form part of form and content).
The idea is for you to look closely as you move through the day at how interesting arrangements of the elements appear in various reflective surfaces: screens that are off, shiny things such as your car or a puddle, windows at night, etc.
Your art assignment is to take a photograph of some reflection that you think is strong compositionally, i.e. contains unity and variety of shapes, values, colors, etc. It should be abstract, so it’s better if it is not entirely clear what we are looking at, so it becomes more about design.
Please make the reflection fill the page. This means that you will have to zoom in a little and probably crop the photo with the photo editor on your phone. Adjust the contrast (value) of the image if the values are too close together and you cannot see the image well enough.
Write a short paragraph explaining the process of creating the image and what you think is communicated by the results. Upload the image and the written paragraph to the discussion board and reply to at least one other student in the class. Your reply might focus on visual elements and design, and your emotional response to the other student’s image.
