1.Traditionally, the goals of Aboriginal justice were to heal the offender and the victim, and to restore harmony to the community. Compare this goal to the stated goals of the Canadian criminal justice system. Are the two sets of goals compatible? What is the actual effect of the Canadian criminal justice system on offenders and their communities?
2.Since 1992, the criminal justice system has made some accommodation for sentencing circles. Describe a sentencing circle, including the process and purpose, who is eligible, and who is involved. Examine some of the potential problems associated with sentencing circles.
3.Describe at least four examples, other than sentencing circles, of processes by which Aboriginal communities are becoming involved in the criminal justice system. Identify the common principles that underlie all of these efforts. How successful have the communities been?
