A Feature Story

Write a 1,200 to 1,500 word Feature Story or Trade Publication Story WITH a Sidebar
A feature story is any story on any topic that is NOT a hard news story. Most of the stories under Top News on
the New York Times' news site are hard news.
A feature story is one that is focused on the lives of people. Many times a feature is on ordinary people doing
interesting things and many times it is tied in with the news. The feature stories that I suggested are about what
students are doing during the shut-down . For example, a feature could be on students who are working more
than they did when they were in classes because they have taken jobs that are possibly exposing them to the
coronavirus such as working at a grocery store.
The story needs to be based on at least 4 phone interviews. In the story, write that the interview was conducted
by phone. (In a rare circumstance such as an interview with someone in another country who does not have a
phone, an interview may be based on an Internet App or on an email interview. However, clear this with your
instructor before you do this.)
Write the story in the third person. (The very rare exception to this would be, if a close friend or family member
has or had the coronavirus, it would be okay to write a first person story about the experience as long as the
story included four sources. Please clear this type of story with me.)
