An aspect of fitness culture
Information about the final project (partly taken from Natalia’s slides on 3/20):
A 5-6 page essay that critically evaluates, from a historical perspective, an aspect of fitness culture that you personally experience this semester.
Double-spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins.
It can be many things: an actual exercise experience (if a class, you should plan to attend at least 3 times), a deep exploration/analysis of an online
influencer, a geographical analysis of fitness businesses in a neighborhood, etc… be creative!
Final project should engage at least three secondary scholarly sources beyond course readings, i.e. at least three sources must all the following criteria:
Secondary source: analyzes or interprets a primary source, e.g. original source of the information discussed, such as a poster or a person directly talking
about their experience in fitness).
Scholarly source: academic journal, book in an academic press; not a newspaper, social media, website, etc.
Historical perspective: analyzes a phenomenon mainly historically, and not medically – i.e. try to avoid sources in journals of sport medicine or kinesiology,
and if you decide to use them, make sure that the articles on these sources include a section on historical aspects and that you explicitly focus on such
section.
In addition to these sources, you can include anything you want, from personal interviews to media articles or Instagram posts.…
