The idea of adding a system to school busses to improve the fuel efficiency by preventing flow separation

In 2012/13 a student group in IL created the idea of adding a system to school busses to improve the fuel efficiency by preventing flow separation along the length of the school bus. In addition to large amounts of funding, global press coverage, and many, many, many awards. The idea never took off.
Using your knowledge of fluids to date, discuss the claims these students made. Was this idea feasible? Why did it not succeed in changing the school bus game. The students claim: “The current version of the GreenShield, version 4, has been shown to improve gas mileage of school buses by 10-20%”
Provide BOTH a mathematical reasoning for why this system would or would not work and your thoughts as to same.
