European exploration of the Americas
Description
As we think about European exploration of the Americas, it is easy for us to see similarities in attitudes and treatment of non-Europeans. But it is equally as important for us to see the differences. Four major European nations were involved in exploration (French, English, Spanish, Portuguese) and each one had different goals, different strategies to achieve those goals, different styles of interacting with native peoples, and ultimately different bases of settlement and control in the Americas.
These differences are important to note and discuss as they set the stage for much of the historical interactions between nations and peoples in the Americas. For example, is one of the reasons Canada and the US have had historically good relations while the US relationship with Mexico has always been complicated and frequently violent due to the fact that both Canada and the US were settled by the English while Mexico was settled by the Spanish?
Here are the questions we need to discuss:
Using information, contrast the differences between European nations involved in the exploration, exploitation, and colonization of the Americas. Do not discuss ALL of the differences in your post — choose to note one or two only.
Then after explaining these differences with support, note how these differences have played a role in the historical evolution of the Americas (both North and South).
